Billie is in a dead-end job that she hates, is engaged to Gayle whom she adores and is wound up tighter than a top. When she has a chemically induced epiphany, she quits her job and makes a dramatic exit, only to realize she has no job, a wedding to plan, and a fiancé who is going to be super pissed. Billie tumbles into a hapless support group of “freelancers” who are more like the island of misfit toys than a crutch. Still, they find a way to parlay their quirky skills into an actual business. But not without some hectic shenanigans by Billie as she races the clock between pulling off the achievement of her career and marrying the girl of her dreams. Spanish filmmaker Sonia Sebastián delighted us with Girl Gets Girl and brings that cred to a very talented cast and a fun story of love and the classic theme of finding the will to make your way, in spite of yourself. Written, directed, and starring an ensemble cast of women, this quirky indie certainly passes the Bechdel test with its refreshing take on the romantic comedy.
Billie and her partner Gayle (Natasha Negovanlis) should be enjoying a romantic engagement, except Billie hates her crappy office job and sadistic boss (Alexandra Billings, Davina on Transparent). Despite the pending wedding bills piling up, Billie makes the knee-jerk move to branch out on her own. A series of goofy missteps lead her to a group of other unemployed misfits—together they form a promising tech start-up company. But will their business plan and financial backers come together in time to save Billie’s wedding day?

Launching an app that matches freelancers with potential employers is an answered prayer for desperate bride Billie (Lisa Cordileone, Easy Abby: How to Make Love More Difficult, Frameline37). But making her startup happen means lying to both her business partners and her fiancée, Gayle (Natasha Negovanlis, Carmilla), in this screwball romp that blends romantic comedy and workplace politics.
With Gayle expecting a fairytale wedding in the coming months, the timing couldn’t be worse for Billie to quit her job, but when her hours are cut at the same time that she is expected to take on more responsibility, she snaps. Wandering into Freelancers Anonymous, a motley assortment of contract workers lacking confidence and direction, Billie sees what they can’t: with their diverse skill sets, the group could form the nucleus of a successful company. But her potential partners are suspicious of her motives, and she doesn’t dare come clean with Gayle about their precarious finances, so Billie gets creative (and sneaky) in order to make all her dreams—work, life, and wedding—come true.
Cordileone is an affable screen presence as Billie, a sad sack with a talent for the devious, transforming that bad behavior into something appealing, and she’s exceptionally well matched with Negovanlis and Jennifer Bartels, in the role of Billie’s sardonic foil, Gillian. The latest comedic romp from director Sonia Sebastián (Girl Gets Girl, Frameline40), Freelancers Anonymous also features winning performances from Amy Shiels (Twin Peaks: The Return), Megan Cavanagh (A League of Their Own), and trans actress Alexandra Billings (Transparent) as Billie’s hysterical robot-ball-obsessed boss.

Billie (Lisa Cordileone) can’t take it anymore—she is miserable working at a failing marketing company run by a useless boss (Transparent’s Alexandra Billings). Her only redemption in life is her relationship and upcoming marriage to struggling actor Gayle (Toronto’s Natasha Negovanlis).
In a moment of drug-induced clarity, Billie quits her job. While searching for a new one she stumbles across a misfit group of unemployed women in a church basement who call themselves “Freelancers Anonymous.” Like Billie, this band of socially awkward ladies want to work but are hopeless at finding jobs—until Billie persuades them to launch an app to reach potential clients. If she could only convince the wedding-obsessed Gayle to support her risky career move, Billie would be all set.
A charmingly goofy comedy brought to life by a stellar set of female comedians, Freelancers Anonymous shines a much-needed spotlight on women in tech.
